Madurai Kamaraj University - MKU is a Statutory University, established in 1966 by Govt. of Tamilnadu. It has 18 schools in 73 sections.The Department of Distance Learning at the University has a student strength of about 1.30 lakh. The university has more than 109 colleges (9 autonomous) including other approved institutions and 7 schools in the evening. Centers is to promote research opportunities for teachers.Extension of the Ministry of Youth and Welfare, NSS, SC / ST cell and implement training for adults.It is recognized and funded by UGC and is a member of Association of Indian Universities. It has been reaccredited by NAAC with grade .Madurai Kamaraj University is located in 753 acres, with Nagamalai in the backgrounds about 13km west of Madurai city on the Theni Main Road.
Two years later the foundation stone for a new home Dr.Zakir Hussein, then President of the India in Madurai - Theni road, 13 km west of the city produced. Since then the university in the big university towns, large planted about 750 acres, appropriately called in Tamil 'Palkalainagar. And in 1978, changed the name of the University Madurai Kamaraj University in honor of one of the most popular people in our country. Both parts of the name suggests, live in a proud tradition of the Tamils and the current axis refers to the ideals
Extension education programs are run by the university through National Service Scheme, Youth Welfare Department and Department of Adult & Continuing Education. Choice Based Credit System is followed at the University departments which enables the student to choose subjects of his/ her choice. Inter-disciplinary courses are also conducted by the university. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) incorporates sufficient flexibility so that students can opt for elective courses to enhance their individual career plans.
